Anthem, Arizona USA

Yes, I live in Anthem, AZ USA and it rocks!  I grew up in Arizona and have lived here all of my life.  Outside of some trips to other countries and about 60% of the US, I enjoyed the little world I had etched out in the "Valley of the Sun".  It's damn hot!  That's for sure!  Every summer.  I hear people every week, "we moved here for the weather".  Well, I haven't experienced a complete Minnesota winter and I hate the cold, but do they forget about the 4-6 months of devastating heat?  They have a contest each year just north of the valley to see how quickly people can cook eggs on the sidewalk using simple tools (aluminum foil, etc. - no cheating with camping stoves)!

About Anthem, Arizona

I just got a referral from Google from someone looking for the Super Walmart here.  Yes, it opens at 8:00 AM tomorrow (Wednesday, June 15, 2005).  I'm not all that psyched about it.  There's plenty to do besides shop around the biggest corporate chain on earth.  Besides, it will be crawling with low-income families soon enough.  I'm sorry to say that and I'm not certain if the stereotype applies to other parts of the world, but here in the valley, it definately applies to Walmart, K-Mart, Target, etc.  I feel really bad for making that comment, but I won't delete it.  There's an awkward separation between weathly and poor that is growing in this world and especially in the USA.  It's a REAL problem that people won't take the time to solve.  That's another subject...  Regardless, the problem is here in my hometown and elsewhere and I see it more in these big stores for some reason. (cheap prices?)

Anyway, we were all lucky to buy in Anthem when we did.  Prices have skyrocketed and so have the values of our houses and property.  If I could qualify, buying and selling houses is all I would do here in the valley.  Tremendous growth with a 2-5 year turnaround.  But, there are bills to pay and mouths to feed and futures to look after other than my own.  Anthem was a designed community.  Designed by DelWebb, this small town boasts a great family environment... well, until people started flocking here from all around the world with lots of money.  The money isn't a bad thing... It's what they do with it.

Anthem is now considered the... THE worst city in Arizona for teen sex, drugs, and academics.  Arizona as a state is already one of the worst for academics!!!  Many parents here don't spend time with their children.  They throw money at them and let them get into trouble without any real consequences.  The city itself is designed for success.  It has everything to offer everyone.  The Country Club offers people the chance to relax in a private, gated community with golf courses.  The Parkside community gives a wide range of families affordable homes as great investments, local parks for the kids and pets, sidewalks and bike lanes, etc.  A community park provides a water park, a large, private gymnasium and workout center, acres of small lakes and sports fields.  Anthem commerce is constantly growing to include a variety of shops and services.  A new plaza just outside of Anthem offers everything we don't have and the movie theatre is just 5 minutes past that.

Everything Phoenix has to offer is 20 minutes away and the serenity of Sedona, Arizona is only 1 hour north.  Great mountains of forest and cooler temperatures (including winter snow) lie at Sedona's border.  Lake Pleasant is only 30 minutes away and other large lakes and small rivers are within a couple of hours.  Rocky Point, Mexico is a few hours away.  San Diego, California is only 6 hours away.

Pros of Arizona's Valley:

  • Mostly good weather and NO freezing winters
  • Leisurely lifestyle for most
  • Growing like crazy
  • No common natural disasters (small tornados have been seen, but very rarely touch down)
  • Money flows in from growing businesses and new residents
  • Manual labor is cheap, largely because of Mexican immigrants

Cons of Arizona's Valley:

  • Summer is so hot that you can get 3rd degree burns from your car door handles
  • Dry desert... no ocean, no natural greens (causes fire hazards)
  • Concerns of drought and food supply (in a state-wide emergency, Arizona would be screwed.  Fortunately, Arizona owns the largest shares of the Mighty Colorado River out of California, Nevada, and New Mexico)
  • One of the worst school systems in the country

I could go on and on and on... But, I'll leave you with that to digest for now.
